Our Mission
Art 4 New York is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that uplifts aging adults, caregivers, creatives, and our community through theatre, music, dance, and visual arts. We believe the arts have tremendous power to bring people together and relieve social isolation, fostering a multi-generational and cross- cultural community that reminds people that they matter and are alive for a purpose.
Art 4 New York is an organization founded in honor of my grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Hilliard, who passed away from Alzheimer's in 2016. To deal with the grief of losing her and repay her for all the love she showed me, I began volunteering at Upper East Side Rehabilitation and Nursing Center's worship service. After falling in love with the residents, I started attending a reading group held after each worship service. Suddenly, an idea came to me: maybe residents at the nursing home would enjoy hearing Shakespeare sonnets like my grandma. Well, it turns out they did!
After reaching out to friends, colleagues, and friendly faces I met on the subway, A4NY was born. We soon created programming that incorporated music, theatre, dance, and visual arts, traveling to nursing homes throughout the tri-state area.
Our leadership team comprises determined women from D.C, Georgia, California, Australia, Japan, and Guyana. Our organization is unique because we build a multi-generational creative community that reflects the cultural diversity of a NY subway car.
I hope you'll be inspired to support Art 4 New York either with your time or donation. I believe art is freeing and can connect people and brighten lives.
Always Choose Love,
